Irish Freemasonry in South East Asia

The Inspectorate of South East Asia.

In the early days of Irish Freemasonry in South East Asia (the 1950s to 1960s), there were only two regular lodges in the region; Lodge 765 in Singapore and Lodge 830 in Kuala Lumpur. A third lodge, Lodge 945 was incepted in the mid-nineties in Bangkok, Thailand. This was followed by four new lodges in the first decade of the new millennium.

All these lodges came under the jurisdiction of the Inspectorate of South East Asia. As a result, lodges were, by necessity, largely independent and worked in accordance with their own ideas. The Inspectorate established among lodges some regularity and uniformity in their observance of the laws and regulations.

Each lodge was by itself independent and run by its Worshipful Master and members. Only matters deemed to be of primary importance were submitted directly to Grand Lodge for approval. This system presided over several years until a report of the Grand Lodge Board of General Purposes submitted to Grand Lodge in October 2009 indicated of changes impending.

Constitution of the Provincial Grand Lodge of South East Asia.

In the Minutes of the Quarterly Communication of the Grand Lodge of Ireland, on the 3rd of October 2009, the Report of the Grand Lodge Board of General Purposes shows that:-

“The Board considered a request from the Grand Inspector in South East Asia on behalf of the Brethren there to establish a Provincial Grand Lodge in the region. The Board approved this request. Recommended to Grand Lodge. Confirmed.”

It was to take a further eight months before the Inspectorate of South East Asia changed on 23rd July 2010 to the newly constituted Provincial Grand Lodge of South East Asia.

The ceremony of the constitution was beholden at Cititel Mid Valley, Kuala Lumpur and conducted by the Provincial Grand Master of Sri Lanka, Right Worshipful Brother Harindran Ramalingam.
